SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 19TH
Forget the blossoming flowers and warmer weather that comes in Spring, as there is far more on offer in the annual Intasure Spring Regatta which sails into Simonstown from 24-26 September.

Zeekovlei resident Rick Nankin, aboard Windpower, fought back after a terrible start last year where they were slowed down by a plastic bag which was caught in their rudder to claim victory.

After finishing that dreaded first race in sixth place, Nankin charged forward to claim four consecutive first place finishes, leaving them top of the IRC Division once the dust had settled.

Royal Cape Yacht Club entry New Balance Gumption, skippered by Bantry Bay's Nicholas Mace, finished as runners-up after taking the lead early on.

Unfortunately these two entries will not be returning this year, as Windpower have been battling it out in the Commodore’s Cup in the UK, but surprise package Andrea Giovannini will be one to watch out for, as well as Al, skippered by Robbie van Rooyen.

“Al will definitely be an entry to watch as they tend to win everything they enter while Scottishe, skippered by Andrea Giovannini, will also challenge. He is a real up-and-coming sailor and just finished second in this year’s Lipton Cup,” said Billy Leisegang, Sailing Manager at the False Bay Yacht Club.

Around 40 entries are already gearing up and ready to take part in this increasingly popular event and, in addition to the annual regatta, the Buccaneer Nationals will also be hosted by the club at the same time.

This event will feature 11 entries all vying for the national title, including a development Isivunguvungu team from the False Bay Yacht Club.

Not all of the attention falls on the IRC division this year though, with Division 3 expected to feature most of the drama on the water. Last year’s winner Garmin Fiesta, skippered by Mike Clarke, comes in as the favourite, but there are a number of entries that will make things tough for the defending champions.

“I think we have a tremendous amount of entries and great support from Royal Cape Yacht Club, Hout Bay Yacht Club and Gordon’s Bay. Entries are generally down in regattas nowadays so to the response has been great,” added Leisegang.

“Our focus is on getting the boats out and riding fantastic races. Another definite highlight is the inclusion of the Buccaneer Nationals. Although our focus is on the water, we also have a strong entertainment committee who will definitely take care of everyone in the evening.

Be sure to head out to Simons Town for some unforgettable racing and entertainment during the Spring Regatta.
